RED BULL ON STAGE: RALLY BULGARIA DAY 1 REPORT

Kimi Raikkonen is a man who lives life on the edge, and today on the Rally Bulgaria he accomplished a number of firsts. For the first time, he tackled a World Championship Rally on asphalt. Also for the first time, he ran as high as fourth overall. Then for the first time, he set the opening two fastest split times on the final stage.Prior to the rally, Kimi completed a successful test in the south of France to evaluate every aspect of his Citroen C4 WRC. Today, he completed the task by also testing the crumple zones.
After a great start in the Red Bull-backed Citroen, Kimi was caught out less than eight kilometres from the finish of the final stage of the day. The car went flying, proving definitively that Red Bull does indeed give you wings. Despite a reasonably heavy landing on its roof, Kimi and his intrepid co-driver Kaj Lindstrom, were able to walk away while their car was brought back to the service park.
The Citroen Junior Team will do its best to repair the car tonight, in order to re-start tomorrow. But whatever happens, Kimi has already learnt a lot about asphalt driving after his strongest performance yet on a World Championship rally.
On only his sixth-ever event in the Citroen C4 WRC, Kimi took the fight to drivers with years more experience than him. Having comfortably run in the top four, the ‘Iceman’ is well prepared for the remaining challenges that the rest of the year will throw at him. Which will hopefully begin tomorrow.
“It was just one of those things,” concluded Kimi. “I’m here to learn, and sometimes you learn the hard way. Before then though, I’d been having a really good time and we were pushing hard: in fact we were fastest on the first two split times. Then unfortunately we went off: this can happen when you’re trying. I really hope that the team can fix the car and that we can be back again tomorrow, as we need the experience and hopefully we can keep on pushing and set some quick times.”
