Q&A: KIMI R. AT THE RALLY JORDAN 2010
Q:キミ、どのようにラリーにここまで適応しましたか?
KR:必ずしも簡単ではなかったけど、予想していたことだよ。簡単だったら、みんながやるだろうね!自分のやり方を段々と学び始めているけど、きちんと知識を得る時間がもっと必要だ。サーキットでのレースよりもラリーにはたくさん変わる要因があるし、それは僕にとって完全にまだ新しいものだ。だけど僕はこのチャレンジも、ラリーの空気も本当に楽しんでいると言わなければならない。(ラリーの)人はすごくフレンドリーでオープンで、すごくありがたく思うよ。今すごくハッピーだよ。
Q:ヨルダンでのあなたのターゲットは何ですか?
KR:ヨルダンでの目標は、今年のはじめからの目標と同じ。より多くの経験を積むこと、もしステージで不安がなくできるならいくつかいいタイムを出すこと。僕にとってのメインの目標は、できる限り学習できるように、イベントをフィニッシュすることだ。だけどすごくトリッキーなラリーになりそうだね。僕が経験したものとは全然違うステージだと思う。
Q:F1を恋しく思いますか?復帰すると思いますか?
KR:今のところ、僕はラリードライバーだから、過去とか将来については考えていないよ。確かにどこかの時点で、次にやることの決定をする必要があるけれど、早くても今年の後半まではないと思う。あらゆることが可能だけど、僕が何か決定をする前に、ラリーでどういう風にやっていけるか知る必要がある。今は、僕はスタートしたばかりだし、これまでは本当に楽しんでいるよ。
Q:他のラリードライバー達は、何か役立つアドバイスをくれましたか?
KR:みんなすごく協力的だったけど、結局は僕自身がクルマのドライブを学ばなければならないんだ。速いドライバーでもそうでなくても、他の誰かが教えられることなんて何も無い。シトロエンのみんなは、クルマとイベントの技術面についてはたくさんの情報を教えてくれた。どうやったらセットアップを最大限に利用することができるか理解しようと、エンジニアと一緒にたくさんの時間を過ごしたよ。
Q:F1とWRCの両方でチャンピオンになった人は今まで誰もいません。これがあなたの目的ですか?
KR:チャンピオンシップについて話のは早いと思うよ、まだ10戦もラリーを走っていないんだから!ラリーは子供の頃から見ていて、いつもやりたいと思っていたことだから、レッドブルが提示してくれたこのチャンスがとても嬉しかったよ。だけどまだ沢山学ぶことがある。F1とは全然違う経験だよ。
Q:今年、一番楽しみにしているラリーはどれですか?
KR:全部楽しみだよ。僕にとってのラリーの魅力のひとつは、本当に大きく異なる路面で、あらゆるコンディションで、コンペティティヴでなければならないということ。あらゆるイベントが僕にとって新しい経験だけど、僕のホームイベントで、去年少し経験のあるラリーフィンランドに戻ることはすごく楽しみだ。サーキットで慣れていた路面と一番似ている、アスファルトのラリーがどういうものかもすごく見てみたい。

Kimi, how have you adapted yourself to rallying so far?
KR: “Well, it hasn’t been exactly easy but I expected that. If it were easy, then everybody would do it! I’m gradually beginning to learn my way around the car, but I need more time to get up to speed properly. There are so many more variables in rallying than circuit racing, and it is all still extremely new to me. I have to say that I’m really enjoying the challenge though and also the whole atmosphere of rallying. People have been very friendly and open, which I appreciate a lot. I’m very happy at the moment.”What will be your objectives in Jordan?
KR: “The objectives I have in Jordan will really be the same as the ones I have had since the start of the year: to gain more experience and to set some good times if we can as we become more comfortable with the stages. The principal objective will be for me to get to the end of the event so that I can learn as much as possible from it. But it’s going to be quite a tricky rally. I’m sure the stages will be very different to anything I have experienced before.”Do you miss Formula One – and do you think you will ever go back?
KR: “For now I’m a rally driver so I’m not thinking about the past or the future. Obviously at some point I need to take a decision about what I do next, but that won’t be until the second half of the year at the earliest. Everything is possible, but I need to know how I will get on in rallying before I take any decisions: for now I have only just started and so far I am really enjoying myself.”Have the other rally drivers given you any pieces of useful advice?
KR: “Everyone has been very helpful, but in the end I just have to learn to drive the car myself: there is nothing anyone can do to teach you and either you are quick or you are not. Having said that, the people at Citroen have been able to give me lots of tips about the technical aspects of the car and the events. I’ve also spent plenty of time with my engineer to try to understand how to get the best out of the set up.”Nobody has ever been Formula One World Champion and World Rally Champion before: is this your objective?
KR: “I think it’s a bit early to be talking about championships: I haven’t even done 10 rallies yet! Rallying was something that I always wanted to do, as I have followed it since I was a child, so I was very pleased to take this opportunity that Red Bull presented to me. But I still have a lot to learn; this is certainly a very different experience than Formula One.”Which rally are you looking forward to most this year?
KR: “Actually I am looking forward to all of them. One of the things that appeals to me most about rallying is that you have to be competitive in such a wide variety of conditions, on a huge range of different surfaces. Every event is a completely new experience for me, but I’m looking forward to getting back to Rally Finland as it is my home event and I have a bit of experience of it from last year. I’m also keen to see what the asphalt rallies are like as obviously the surface is more similar to what I have been accustomed to on circuits.”
