ちょ、■wwwwwwwwwwww An impressive performance from Coulthard as ‘best of the rest’ for Red Bull in fifth.
Kimi Raikkonen: Of course it would have been better to be on pole, but all things considered, second place is a good result, especially when you consider the uncertainty about how much fuel those in the top ten are running. I am very happy with the handling of the car this weekend: we have shown we are competitive in all conditions and I think that should be the same even if it rains, which seems likely. I am confident. We know the situation in the championship is pretty compromised but I will do my all to try and win.
But I don’t think past results mean anything. We will see how it goes this weekend, although the position in the championship does not look strong. I will be trying to win the last two races.
Kimi Raikkonen: A good day, even if the Friday results have to be considered for what they are, given that we do not know what our main rivals are up to. The car quicky proved to be well balanced, but there is still room to improve the handling. The track was very slippery, but luckily, there are plenty of escape roads that any mistakes don’t cost a driver anything. I’m expecting a very close fight tomorrow.(FerrariWorld.com)
2006 CHINESE GRAND PRIX RACE REPORT
KIMI RAIKKONEN
“That was a shame as it was looking like we could achieved a win today. I don’t know exactly what happened, but all of a sudden the throttle didn’t react correctly and the engine went into safety mode and selected neutral. I made a good start and then got on the outside and gained a couple of places – it was a bit tight, so I didn’t manage to get past Fisichella at that point. I overtook him later on and was gaining on Alonso before my first scheduled pitstop. I’m disappointed, but at least we showed that we have the speed, so I’m looking forward to Japan now.”

2006 CHINESE GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING KIMI RAIKKONEN
“It was a bit of a lottery in qualifying as it was really wet and slippery on track. However we did what we could and fifth is not too bad considering that I had traffic in the final corner which cost me a few tenths. The interesting thing will be to see what the weather will do tomorrow. I lost my mirror during the final qualifying session but didn’t notice it, and it had no effect. Now we will see what happens in the race.”
2006 CHINESE GRAND PRIX FRIDAY PRACTICE KIMI RAIKKONEN
“A quiet start to practice today. The rain halfway through the second session did affect our programme slightly as we planned to run towards the end of that practice. However we obtained some initial useful data and will continue our work in tomorrow’s practice after which we have to make our Michelin tyre choice. I had a small spin on my first run in the morning’s session, but these things happen – it was just a bit slippery.”
2006 CHINESE GRAND PRIX PREVIEW KIMI RAIKKONEN
“The Shanghai track is great to drive, it is quite wide so can be good for overtaking in places. You do need good mechanical grip for the slower corners, this is really important for turn 13 as it exits out onto the long back straight, that is over one kilometre, so having good speed as you leave the corner is vital. The final hairpin, turn 14, at the end of the back straight is probably the most obvious overtaking opportunity. You can get into a slipstream, as speeds reach nearly 330km/h, and the go for position under braking as you drop down to around 85km/h. Turn four is also pretty important, as you need to take quite a precise line through turn five, which is very long to be quick. So far in China I have finished in third and second and my aim for this year is to take the top step of the podium with Team McLaren Mercedes!”
2005 CHINESE GRAND PRIX SUNDAY Official Mclaren Mercedes press release
Team McLaren Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen finished second in the last race of the 2005 Formula One season in Shanghai. The Finn was on a two-stop strategy and came in on laps 19 (10 seconds) and 30 (5.04 seconds). Team mate Juan Pablo Montoya was forced to retire on lap 24 with an engine failure. The Colombian hit a loose manhole cover at Turn 10 on lap 18. He came in to replace a punctured front right tyre on the same lap (10 seconds) and then pitted again one lap later to refuel (11.2 seconds). KIMI RAIKKONEN
“Today was not our day and finishing second was the best we could dobut obviously it was not enough to take the title. The car was not quick enough at the start of the race and when it really came on towards the end it was too late. I don’t know why this was the case as we have been quick throughout the weekend. The Safety Car was deployed due to the loose manhole cover. The lap before Juan Pablo hit the cover I saw it was at a strange angle and just managed to avoid it the following lap. The whole incident brought out the Safety Car which meant that we were not really able to use our strategic advantage. We did what we could this year but it was not enough so congratulations to Renault but next year we try again and I can’t wait.” JUAN PABLO MONTOYA
“A strange race to end the season. The car was working well, but then I came into the corner, went on the kerb and hit the loose manhole cover which brought out the Safety Car. However the damage had been done, and eventually I was forced to crawl back into the pits with an engine failure. Not the way I would have liked to end the season but things happen. I’m sure that we will come back stronger next year. Thanks to the team on and off track who have made me feel right at home. Coming so close to the titles this year has only made us more determined so bring on 2006.”
CHINESE GRAND PRIX SATURDAY KIMI RAIKKONEN
“We knew before qualifying that we would struggle to get pole position today, but I don’t think we have anything to worry about. Our strategy should be strong and whilst the car was not perfect on the qualifying lap I’m confident that it will be as good as it has been throughout practice. Both Juan Pablo and myself are in strong positions to get the results we need to win the Constructors’ World Championship.” JUAN PABLO MONTOYA
“As a result of what happened in Japan last weekend I had to go out for my qualifying lap as number two which was really frustrating. The lap was OK, but there was just no grip. The circuit conditions continued to improve, so of course I’m disappointed as I know I could have probably been on the front row. My car is working well and if everything comes together I should be able to get the result we need.”
2005 CHINESE GRAND PRIX PREVIEW KIMI RAIKKONEN
“I am hoping for a less eventful race this weekend in China! However, I am prepared to battle together with the team as much as we did in Japan, and more if necessary, to get the result we need. It is going to be an exciting race and we will all do what we can to take the title. I enjoyed driving at Shanghai last year, as it has a good mix of challenges, such as the really long straight with overtaking opportunities at each end, which saw some interesting racing. The track is generally very wide, however there are some places where it narrows down, including through the long turn one, which gets tighter and tighter. Following the Japanese race, I flew to Tokyo for a couple of days, and will travel to Shanghai on Thursday.” JUAN PABLO MONTOYA
“Following Japan, I hope I am able to have a more productive race in China to help try and win the Constructors’ title with Team McLaren Mercedes. The MP4-20s are still awesome and with the team, I want to be able to make the most of that. The Shanghai International Circuit has a little bit of everything. I always like Tilke circuits; they seem to suit my driving style. The long back straight, where we reach over 330km/h, has a hairpin at the end, which is a great place to pass. Turn four is also fun, you need to get a good exit to get a good lap time, and it immediately goes into turn five, which is very long and you pull lots of g forces. I arrived in Shanghai on Monday and have spent my time relaxing in preparation for the race.”
