Hamilton penalised ten places for France
Lewis Hamilton has been given a 10-place grid penalty for the French GP after failing to pay attention to a red light in the pit lane in Sunday’s Canadian race.
The punishment was handed out by FIA race stewards after they reviewed the incident in which Hamilton ran into the back of Raikkonen as the Ferrari driver was observing a red light in the pit lane on lap 18 of the race, which was eventually won by Robert Kubica.
Nico Rosberg of Williams was given the same 10-place drop on the grid after he ran into the back of Hamilton’s McLaren Mercedes in the same incident.
Hamilton, Rosberg hit with grid penalty
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will lose ten places on the grid at the French Grand Prix following their pitlane incident in Canada.
Hamilton crashed into the back of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen at the end of the pitlane on lap 20, when the Finn braked to stop in front of the red light. The Briton said he saw the light too late and could not avoid hitting the Ferrari.
Both men retired in the accident.
Rosberg could not stop in time either and hit Hamilton from behind, although the Williams driver was able to continue in the race.
Both Hamilton and Rosberg will be hit with a 10-ten grid penalty in France in two weeks’ time.

Hamilton apologises to Raikkonen
“It wasn’t a great stop. I saw the two guys in front battling in the pitlane and all of a sudden they stopped. I saw the red light but by the time I stopped it was too late,” said Hamilton.
“It is a lot different if you crash into the wall and are angry, it is not like that. I apologise to Kimi if I cost him the race, but these sort of things happen.
“I would rather neither of us were out, we were so quick, I was in front. Next time.”
Hamilton says sorry but doesn’t admit guilt
Lewis Hamilton has, somewhat peculiarly, confessed he apologised to Kimi Raikkonen after their race-ending crash during the Canadian GP but refused to admit he was to blame for their prang.
“I don’t what happened,” Hamilton admitted. “I saw Robert and Kimi and didn’t want to get involved with them. By the time I saw the red light it was too late. It’s unfortunate – I’ve apologised to Kimi but these things happen.”
Asked whether it had been a “consolation” that Hamilton’s race-ending mistake also proved terminal for his closest rival in the World Championship, the Englishman replied: “Not really. I’d rather it not happened. I was breezing it – it was going to be an easy victory.”
Kimi Raikkonen: It’s unbelievable how much time I lost at turn 10, lap after lap. The track was already beginning to break up in Q1 and I had no drive: it was like driving on ice and I never managed to find the right line at this point. It’s real shame because the car was going very well and I could have fought for pole position. I can’t understand how things like this can happen: maybe it’s down to the higher temperatures, or repair job at this point not done properly but one thing’s certain, in the race tomorrow, it will be very difficult to get through here. But the situation is not that bad. We are quick, as could be seen all weekend long up to qualifying and starting on the clean side of the track is definitely a good thing. Let’s wait and see what happens tomorrow.
Kimi Raikkonen: I am quite satisfied with this first day of testing. We were always quick. The car turned out to be well balanced right from the morning and I think we can aim for the top spots over the rest of the weekend. From what we have seen today, there is not much difference in the performance of the two types of Bridgestone tyre we have available to us, but the track conditions are bound to change over the next couple of days. At this track, it is very important to have the brakes sorted in the race and we also worked on this.
Kimi Canadian Preview
Our preparations for Canada were done in Paul Ricard before Monaco. It was a rainy day, so not too much was learnt. But that’s the same for all the teams. Ferrari have a good record in Canada, but it is going to be close between the top teams.
Obviously the qualifying is getting more and more crucial. That is why it is so important to get a good set up and to have a clean weekend with the earlier session. It was very close in Monaco, but as we’ve seen the whole year two tenth can differ the pole from 5th on the grid.
Canada is all about heavy breaking and going over the curbs. Our car is now much better for Montreal, too. We expect us to be competitive there. But, like always, it’s easier to say after the first day of running.
Propably there has not been a Canadian Grand Prix without having a safety car employed. Most likely it will happen again on Sunday. But, if that will be the case, I don’t feel you can be conservative in your stragety, when the competition is so close.
With the current sagetu car rules in place there is an element of luck involved, when you fight to win the race.
To win in Canada the car needs to be good under braking, because it’s very tough on brakes at this circuit. If the safety car is employed, then you just got to hope it happens at the right time.
I said at the very beginning of the season, it’s going to be like last year and the championship will be decided at the end of the season.
We have now one third of the season behind, we have 35 points and are second in the championship. I would rate us to be there among the contenders as we expected to be. Nothing has been won and nothing has been lost, either.
After Monaco I don’t feel there is any need to panic, because it’s very close. In fact I’m much closer this season in points standings compared to lase year.
I will adopt the same policy to get the maximum amount of points and go for the win if it’s possible. The target is to win in Canada. We will do our very best to make it come through.
Kimi Raikkonen: It was a very difficult race for me, right from the beginning. I did not have much grip at the start, being on the dirty side of the track and immediately after, I hit Felipe’s car with my front wing. Then, there were so many safety car periods that it caused chaos. On top of thatm after Kubica’s accident, a piece of debris got stuck in my front wing and I had so much understeer and some difficulties put together made this a really complicated race. At the end of the day, I picked up come points: it could have been better but it could also have been worse.(FerrariWorld.com)
■Q1
先生「I have a problem!」

Kimi Raikkonen: Of course I would have preferred to have been further forward on the starting grid, but we know we have a competitive car when runnin at race pace and as far as today’s result is concerned, there is always the unknown factor concerning the fuel levels of those fighting it out in Q3. I didn’t have any particular problems today, but I lacked a bit of speed when compared to our closest rivals. However, before getting upset about it, we must wait and see how the race goes. We will do our utmost to get the best result possible.(FerrariWorld.com)

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX KIMI RAIKKONEN
“That was not an easy race. I was really pushing Fernando for the lead in the opening part and was able to have a go at the hairpin when he went wide, but it was not to be. We had some problems with the clutch in both pitstops which hampered our chance of victory. Traffic didn’t make things easier and at the end I was in second. However then the Safety Car came back out and I was pushing to see if there was a chance of catching Fernando, but went wide at the hairpin which allowed Michael past. That was a shame but we always want to do everything we can to win. We can leave Montreal knowing that we are competitive and I look forward to Indianapolis.” JUAN PABLO MONTOYA
“That was a bit of a mess. I was battling with Nico Rosberg in the opening laps and was next to him, but then we touched. I thought I had damaged the nose and as the Safety Car came out I went into the pits. The team did a precautionary tyre change and changed my race strategy to give me the best chance of a strong finishing position. I had a good battle with DC and then with Ralf and was making progress. The car was great, but I was sliding quite a bit as I had lost a deflector and consequently was a bit light on downforce. I was trying to make up positions, but then I touched the wall and damaged the rear and that was the end of the race for me. It was a shame as I think we would have been competitive, but the incident with Rosberg really ruined things for me. There is no point in saying who is to blame. I now look forward to Indianapolis where hopefully our competitiveness will continue to improve.”

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING KIMI RAIKKONEN
“As the last couple of races have shown we are obviously going in the right direction with the car and I’m pleased to have qualified in third. The car felt fantastic this morning during practice, but we had to make some minor changes bearing the race in mind and I wasn’t as comfortable during qualifying and was sliding a lot more. As a result third is very good and I’m confident that we should be able to leave Montreal with a strong result.” JUAN PABLO MONTOYA
“The first two parts of qualifying were very good for me. However I pushed a little bit too hard in the last run and made a mistake at the chicane which cost me a lot of time – I think without this I probably would have been on the second row with Kimi. This is quite frustrating as overall my car was pretty good today. Anyway I’m relaxed and I will look at my options and see what happens to put myself in the best position during the race.”
