Victory for Kimi in the right place at the right moment

I really like to win and I love the Spa circuit. It was great coming back to win here at this track. After such a difficult season my goal was to gain at least one success with this car and we did it. This is definitely the most beautiful moment of the year!
The F60 wasn’t easy to drive with an empty tank, so after Q1 I though it might be difficult to get into Q3. But in Q2 I managed to drive a good lap qualifying myself for the next round. I drove well in Q3, but as the cars were all pretty close I couldn’t do better than position six on the grid. Saturday afternoon I had a really good feeling: I knew that I could fight for the win. Naturally the KERS helped us a lot at the start and when the safety car came in. That doesn’t change the victory’s value, but we enjoyed the first success with this car using the KERS.
I knew that the start would be crucial. Barrichello had a very slow start, which didn’t help me, but I managed to come out of the Source in third position and I was right behind Kubica at the Eau Rouge. Then I overtook him, but I took the first right-hand corner after the main straight too wide, holding second position. Then the safety car helped us. At the restart we knew that it would be crucial to keep the tyres and the brakes at the right temperature to attack Fisichella while exploiting the KERS. There was a moment when we were really close to colliding during the overtaking manoeuvre, but I could hold my line on the track. Once I had passed him and I was in the lead I knew that the main part had been done. We had more or less the same fuel loads and although he was very fast there weren’t any possibilities for him to attack me. Maybe it would have been easier if we’d had different types of tyres, but we crossed the line first. It was great listening to the Finnish national anthem on the podium again! I came very close to a win many times last year, but for some reason or another I couldn’t make it.
I’ll give my best to gain as many points as possible in the remaining GPs. It won’t be easy, because the other teams will show up with further developments, while we “froze” the F60, concentrating on the project for 2010. We have to try to give our best with what we have, trying to fight for a place on the podium. We’re very happy for our fans, who finally had a reason to celebrate. There’s no better way to arrive in Monza. I know that I’m repeating myself, but I want to say it again: it won’t be easy, but we’ll give our best to be on the podium again.

F60は空タンクでのドライブは簡単じゃない。だからQ1の後、Q3に進出するのは難しいと思った。でもQ2で何とかいいラップを出して、次のラウンドに進むことができたんだ。Q3ではいいドライブができたけど、全車が接近していたので、6番グリッドよりいいポジションは獲得できなかった。土曜日の午後、僕は本当にいい感触があったんだ。優勝を賭けて戦えると分かってた。当然、KERSはスタートとセーフティーカーのリスタートで随分助けになった。それが勝利の価値を変えたりはしないけど、KERSを使ったこのクルマの最初の優勝を楽しんだよ。
スタートが重要だということは分かっていた。バリチェロのスタートがとても遅くて、それは僕を助けはしなかった。でもラ・ソースを3番手で抜けることができて、オールージュではクビサの後ろにつけた。そして彼をオーバーテイクした。だけどメインストレートの後のコーナーを少しワイドに行き過ぎてしまって、2位のポジションをキープした。それからSCが僕達を助けた。リスタートで、タイヤとブレーキの温度を保っておくことが、KERSを使ってフィジケラにアタックする時に大切だと分かっていた。僕達が追い越しをかけている時、とても接近した瞬間があったけど、僕はトラックでラインをキープできた。一度彼を抜いてリードしてしまえば、メインパートは終わりだと知っていた。僕達は大体同じ燃料を積んでいた。彼はとても速かったけど、僕にアタックする可能性は少しもなかった。たぶん僕達が違うタイヤを選んでいたら、それは簡単だったと思う。でも僕達が最初にフィニッシュラインに到達した。ポディウムでまたフィンランド国歌を聴けてとても素晴らしかったよ!去年は何度も勝利に近づいたけど、何かの理由で僕は勝てなかった。
残りのグランプリでも、できるだけ多くのポイントを獲得できるようにベストを尽くすつもりだ。2010年のクルマに集中するため、F60(の開発)を凍結した今、他のチームは開発を進めてくるから簡単ではないだろうけど。僕達が持っているリソースでベストを尽くさなければならないし、ポディウムを賭けて戦おうとするだろう。ファンがついにお祝いができるようになってとても嬉しい。モンツァに向けてこれ以上いいことはないね。同じことを繰り返し言っているのは分かっているけどもう一度言おう。簡単ではないけど、ポディウムのために再び頑張るよ。

Kimi Raikkonen: Let’s say that I’m not too thrilled about the sixth place, but considering the circumstances I’m glad I gained these three points, the first of this season for me and for the Team. It wasn’t a start to the season as we had expected, but that’s how it went. Three points are not much, considering that the Championship’s leader won the race, but it’s still better than nothing. Finally bringing home both cars, we’ve made a small step forward. Now we’re ready to make the most important thing, hoping that it will enable us to fight for the top positions. The race at Sakhir was the hottest of the season. It was really hard work, but I didn’t have any problems: I really liked it, because that means that the hard preparations during the winter bears fruit.
The F60 did fine in Bahrain, although we lacked some speed. The set up was good, especially with the softer tyres. The trend seems to be confirmed that our cars run better with higher temperatures. A fifth place might have been possible, but we lost some precious seconds due to the small problem during the pit stop, otherwise I would have rejoined in front of Rubens, although then it would have been difficult keeping him under control. I fought with Glock’s Toyota, although I had the harder compound, but my car was faster on the straight; that was enough to keep him behind me.
I’ve been asked how many points we’ve thrown away in the first races. It’s difficult to reply, but most of all I don’t want to continue talking about the mistakes and the problems we’ve had. As usual we have to look ahead: the past is the past and we can’t change it. The most important thing is now that there is an important development of the car coming up. The Team works an awful lot to improve the performance for the next race at Barcelona, although we know that the others are doing the same. Let’s hope that we can make a bigger step forward than the other teams. If we manage to gain at least three tenths of a second, then we’ll be able to fight for more than just a sixth place.
Before we start thinking again about the Championship, we’ve got to see what we can do at Barcelona. It’s obvious that the situation is difficult, especially because there is a driver who won three out of four races. Obviously I won’t surrender, but we’ve got to get back on the podium as soon as possible and make the car faster so we’re able to fight for the win as of mid-season. These days I’m following one of my preferred sports: ice hockey. The world championships are held in Switzerland and Finland is playing at an ice rink close to my house. I hope my team will continue to win, as last night against Denmark, the first match I’ve watched. I’ll try to go to the stadium as often as possible: I know several players and I’m really enjoying watching them playing live.
6位はあまりわくわくしないポジションだと言えよう。だけど状況を考えたら、僕にとってもチームにとっても今季初得点となったこの3点はとても嬉しい。僕達が期待した通りのシーズンスタートとはならなかったけど、これが結果だ。チャンピオンシップリーダー(=バトン)がレースに勝ったことを考えれば、3ポイントは十分ではないけど、まだないよりはましだ。とうとう2台ともが完走して、僕達は小さな前進をした。いま、僕達は最重要なものを作る準備ができている。それでトップのポジションをかけて戦えることを期待している。サヒールはシーズンで最も暑いレースだ。すごくハードだったけど、僕には何の問題もなかった。冬の間のハードな準備が実を結んだということだから、すごく嬉しかったよ。
F60はバーレーンでよくやったと思う。スピードはまだ不足していたけど。セットアップも、特に柔らかい側のタイヤではよかった。僕達のクルマは、気温が高いとよく走る傾向にあるみたいだ。5位も可能だったかもしれないけど、僕達はピットストップの時に小さなトラブルで貴重な時間を失ってしまった。そうでなければ僕はルーベンスの前で戻れたと思うけど、彼の前でコントロールするのは難しかっただろうね。僕はトヨタのグロックを相手に戦った。彼より硬いコンパウンドで走っていたんだけど、僕のクルマはストレートでより速かったから、彼を僕の後ろにキープしておくのには十分だった。
何ポイント無駄にしたか訊かれたけど、答えることは難しい。でも、ミスとトラブルについては特に話を続けたくない。いつも通り、僕達は前を向いていなくてはいけないんだ。過去は過去で変えることはできない。最も重要なことはクルマの重要な開発が進んでいるということだ。チームはバルセロナでの次のレースでパフォーマンスを向上させるためにハードに働いている。でも僕達は他のチームも同じだということも分かっている。僕達が他のチームより大きく前進できることを期待しよう。少なくとも0.3秒縮めることができれば、6位以上を狙って戦える。
チャンピオンシップのことを考え直し始める前に、バルセロナで何ができるか見てみなければならない。4レース中3勝したドライバーがいるから、状況が難しいことは明らかだ。僕は降伏しないけど、できるだけ早くポディウムに戻って、シーズンの中盤には優勝を争えるようにクルマを速くしなければならない。
最近は、好きなスポーツのひとつに夢中だ。アイスホッケー。世界選手権がスイスで開催されるし、フィンランドの家の近くにあるアイスリンクで遊んでいる。僕が最初に見た昨夜のデンマーク戦みたいに、フィンランドが勝ち続けるといいなと思っているよ。できるかぎりスタジアムに行こうと思っている。何人かプレイヤーを知っているし、彼らが生でプレーしているのを見るのはすごく楽しいからね。

Chinese GP review
Unfortunately this was another difficult weekend for us. We didn’t gain any points in China either, because reliability let us down again. Friday was very difficult. The car’s set up was not bad, but we simply didn’t have enough downforce compared to the others. On Saturday some aerodynamic updates, Felipe had the day before, were added also to my car. Therefore the qualifying went slightly better than we had expected. Unfortunately we opted not to use the KERS due to safety reasons, which had an impact on the performance in terms of a couple of tenths of a second. During the race I got stuck behind slower cars several times; that’s when a little bit of extra performance would have helped. It seems as if things never go the right way in the rain, but I still like driving in wet weather; it’s obvious that when grip and downforce are missing things are difficult.
We’re without points, which doesn’t make life easy for us. But we’ve already been in much more difficult situations. The Team has to stay focused and give it everything. There will be several updates at Barcelona and after this race we’ve got to understand where we are compared to the others.
The upcoming weekend we’re in Bahrain, where we had several tests during the winter. The temperatures should be much higher here compared to the test sessions. Ferrari has won the races in the last two years here at the Sakhir circuit, but honestly I don’t think it’s possible this time. If we manage to have a flawless weekend this time, we can gain points and maybe even a place on the podium. Finally I want to say that I’m glad that Sebastian won the Chinese GP. He’s a nice guy and he drove a great race. He deserved this success.
残念なことに、僕達にとってまた困難なウイークエンドだった。信頼性のために、中国でも1ポイントも獲得できなかった。金曜日はとても難しかった。クルマのセットアップは悪くなかったけど、単に他のチームと比べて僕達には十分なダウンフォースが無かった。土曜日には、前日にフェリペがテストした若干の空力的アップデートが僕のクルマにも加えられた。それで、予選は僕達が予想したよりも僅かにうまくいった。残念だけど僕達は安全上の理由でKERSを使わない選択をした。それはパフォーマンスにコンマ何秒かの影響を及ぼした。レースの間は、僕は何度か遅いクルマの後ろで動けなかった。ほんの少しの(KERSによる)パフォーマンス(増)があれば助けになっただろうけど。雨が降る中では物事が普通どおりにいかないように思えるけど、僕はウェットでドライブするのが好きだよ。グリップとダウンフォースがなくなっているとき、難しいのは明らかだし。
僕達にはポイントがなくて、それは僕達にとって楽なことではない。だけど僕達は既にずっと難しい状況に置かれ続けている。チームは集中して全力で取り組み続けなければならない。いくつかのアップデートがバルセロナで予定されていて、このレースの後、僕達は他のチームとどこが違っているか理解しなければならない。
次の週末は、冬の間にテストをしたバーレーンだ。気温はテストセッションと比べると高いだろう。フェラーリはサヒールサーキットでここ2年勝っているけど、正直に言って僕は今度も可能であるとは思わない。僕達が何とか今度はパーフェクトなウィークエンドを過ごせれば、僕達はポイントを獲得できるだろうし、多分ポディウムさえも可能だろう。最後に、セバスチャンの中国GP優勝を僕は喜んでいる。彼はナイスガイだし、素晴らしいレースだった。彼はこの成功に値するよ。
キミに「ナイスガイ」って言われるんだからよっぽどイイコなんだろうなーべっつんて。
「遅いクルマにつっかかった」っていつのことでしょうね、正直コース上であんたらより遅いクルマはあんまりいなかったよ…ｗ

It was the first time in many years we were left without a single point in the first race. So, obviously, yes – it was not a good start to the season. By far. It’s frustrating, but there is nothing we can do to change it anymore. We just keep pushing hard and try to improve next time.
It was only one race and things can turn around very quickly. Also last year Melbourne was not that good place for us and then one week later I won in Malaysia. Again things can turn around very quickly. The weekend overall was a very disapointing experience. We did not score any points and we did not have the quickest car on the circuit. There is a lot of work to be done, but I have a great team behind me to change things quickly.
It was one of the toughest weekends I have ever had in F1. We lost some valuable time in practise and it was a painful setback. Every lap counts, especially now when testing is so limited. It’s always hard to say how much we lost, but for sure it did not help. Probably the best thing for us was that the KERS system worked well at the start, but I did not get a clear path to take full advantage of making up positons. It was not enough go gain places, but the feeling to use KERS is great. Our speed was not as competitive as we expected beforehand. I was not so surprised to see the Brawn GP at the front. We already saw in testing that they have been very quick. Now there are new favourites at the top. Obviously it’s going to be very tight and very challenging fight for the championship and that’s very good for the sports.
Before going to the season I said, that we need to see how things are after the first two races. Malaysia is more of a normal circuit to judge how competitive we are. I think the championship is wide open. This was only the first race of the season and whilst it would have been nice to start the season well, there are many races remaining. It’s too early to start making predictions. The picture will become clearer only after the first 4 or 5 races.
Now we go to Malaysia, which has always been good place for me. It’s a proper circuit compared to Melbourne. Due to the cars being so different this year, it’s very hard to know just where we are compared to our competitors. I just love to race at Sepang. It’s a very challenging place, the weather is hot like in a Finnish Sauna and it really demands a lot to get good weekend there. We have a lot of work to be done after Melbourne, but we will do our very best to win the race again.

まだたっだの1レース(が終わった)だけだし、物事はすぐに変わるものだから。去年もメルボルンは僕達にとっていい場所ではなかったけど、1週間後に僕はマレーシアで勝ったんだ。状況は今度もまた素早く変わるよ。全体的にとてもがっかりしたレースウイークだった。1ポイントさえも獲得できなかったし、サーキットで一番速いクルマをもっていなかった。するべき多くの作業があるけど、僕の後ろには状況を迅速に変えてくれるとても素晴らしいチームが控えてくれている。
僕がF1で経験した中で最も厳しいレースウイークのひとつだった。プラクティスでは貴重な時間を失って、それはとても痛かったよ。テストが制限されている今となっては特に、あらゆる周回が大切なんだ。僕達が失ったものがどれほどであるのか言及するのは難しいけど、助けにならなかったことだけは確かだ。たぶん僕達にとって一番よかったことはKERSシステムがスタートでよく機能したということだ。だけどポジションを上げるために機能をフルに活用することはできなかった。順位を上げるには至らなかったけど、KERSを使う感触はよかったよ。僕達のスピードは、自分達が前もって期待していたほどコンペティティヴではなかった。Brawn GPが強かったことについては僕はそれほど驚いていない。僕達は既にテストで彼らがとても速かったのを見ているからね。今のトップは新しいチームになった。チャンピオンシップはとてもタイトでチャレンジングな戦いになりそうだけど、スポーツにとってはとてもいいことだ。
シーズンが始まる前に言ったように、最初の2レースが終わった後に状況を考える必要がある。マレーシアは、僕達がどの程度の競争力をもっているのか判断するために、(メルボルン）より一般的なサーキット寄りだ。僕はチャンピオンシップがオープンだと思う。シーズンの1レース目が終わっただけだし、たくさんのレースがまだ残っている。予測を始めるのはまだ早すぎるよ。状況がさらに明確になるのは、4、5レース終わった後だろう。
僕達はマレーシアに向かうけど、僕にとってはいつもいい場所なんだ。メルボルンと比べて普通のサーキットだしね。今年はクルマが大きく異なっているから、他のチームと比べることはとても難しいんだ。セパンでレースをするのは大好きだよ。とてもチャレンジングな場所で、天気はフィンランドのサウナみたいだし、いい週末を求められる。メルボルンを終えて作業がたくさんあるけど、レースで再び勝つために全力を尽くすよ。
今日はファンクラブメールで予告されていたファンクラブ限定エリアオープンの日ですが、一向に何のお知らせもなし。間に合うのか?!
