Raikkonen not feeling extra pressure
Monday, November 27th 2006, 09:53 GMT
Speaking at his last public function with McLaren at Zurich in Switzerland, Raikkonen told Swiss magazine 20 Minuten that he was open-minded about his future.
“Even if in Ferrari I’m taking the place of a legend like Schumacher, I don’t feel any pressure,” he said. “Obviously I know the team, but I don’t know how it will go. I still haven’t demonstrated anything with Ferrari.
“It’s every driver’s dream to sooner or later arrive at a top team like this one. But if I didn’t sign with Ferrari I would have had other possibilities.”
He added: “I don’t know if we will be favourites for the title. What’s certain is that Ferrari has been very strong in the last years. We’ll see how the new car goes. I hope I’ll have a competitive package at my disposal.”
Raikkonen is due to spend this winter at home in Finland, but is keeping himself in shape just in case there is a last-minute release from McLaren that will allow him to test.
“I’d love to be able to test with Ferrari before the end of the year,” added Raikkonen. “But for now I’m just keeping myself fit.”
Looking back on his time at McLaren, whi failed to deliver the world championship that he is eager to clinch, Raikkonen said that he did not have any bad feelings about his time there – but said it was obvious why he chose to leave.
“My time with McLaren-Mercedes had its disappointments, but altogether I have very good memories of this time – and I would not have liked to miss those. But clearly one knows that Ferrari was very strong over the last few years.
“We don’t know how the car will run, but I hope naturally that we have a good package next season.”

(F1-Live.com)
TEAM McLAREN MERCEDES AND STEINMETZ ADD ICE TO SPARKLING 40TH ANNIVERSARY
Monte Carlo, Wednesday, 24th May 2006: Team McLaren Mercedes and Steinmetz unveiled their latest collaboration earlier today in the build-up to the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix.
Steinmetz has worked in conjunction with Team McLaren Mercedes’ engineers to manufacture a Diamond steering wheel. The Mercedes-Benz star on both Kimi Raikkonen’s and Juan Pablo Montoya’s steering wheels have been emblazoned with round, brilliant cut, white, natural diamonds, expertly cut by Steinmetz, creating a visual impact inside the cockpit never seen before.
To announce the creation of the Diamond steering wheels, Steinmetz commissioned the creation of an exact replica of this year’s Team McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 car, made from two tonnes of ice, into which Kimi Raikkonen, the ‘Iceman’, climbed. The ‘Iceman’, in his ice car, with his ‘iced’ steering wheel – a suitable way to announce to the world Steinmetz and Team McLaren Mercedes’ new Formula 1 creation.
Ralf slams Kimi
Ralf Schumacher has aimed fire at a ‘cool’ F1 rival — so-called ‘iceman’ Kimi Raikkonen.
30-year-old Schumacher, who drives for Toyota, was asked by the German ‘Stuttgarter Zeitung’ newspaper what he thought of McLaren’s monosyllabic Finnish star.
”People call him ‘cool’, because he doesn’t say anything,” Ralf, the younger brother of world champion Michael Schumacher, said.
”But if I ran around the paddock behaving like him, people would call me the most arrogant idiot of all time.”
Kimi Raikkonen visited the olympics in Torino and watched the icehockey final between Sweden and Finnland.
Here is a picture of Kimi and the swedish icehockey star Peter Forsberg after the game.
Eventhough Finnland lost 3-2 Kimi seems to be in good spirit.
Q&A WITH KIMI RAIKKONEN AND JUAN PABLO MONTOYA Are you looking forward to getting back to testing?
I have not driven a Formula One car since 16th October in China, so for sure I can’t wait to get back to it this week, where I will be in an MP4-21. I will be driving on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th, and I am looking forward to seeing what the team have done. What are your expectations for 2006?
For sure it’s the same as every year, I want to win races and World Championships with Team McLaren Mercedes.
Everyone in the media seems to think that it will be us, Renault and Ferrari again this year, with me, Juan Pablo, Fernando and Michael battling it out. For me that would be great and I hope so for the fans that it is another exciting year like 2005, although with a slightly different end result! How is your knee following your minor post season surgery in the last week of October?
It is fine, I recovered well and was back training at the end of November.
On receiving his award, Kimi discussed his highlights of the year, “I guess all the wins for sure. The Japanese Grand Prix was one of the great moments, and Monaco was a good place to win. It could have been better this season but I am happy. It is always exciting to fight, and of course we wanted to win, but that is part of the game – and still it was one of the best years for me in Formula One.”
Ron Dennis collected the award on behalf of the team, “I’m a bit mystified why I’m up here because there are so many people behind this Grand Prix car. It doesn’t matter whether it is rallying or Grand Prix racing – it is hard to win.
McLaren Racing has a team of 136 engineers and designers and they designed the car using a matrix system with cross functional responsibilities. All of this talent is what goes on behind us and I’m here to take the award for them. One person I have to acknowledge is Adrian Newey, who has got a challenge ahead of him and I wish him well.”
“This season was a great battle and I have to complement Pat Symonds and Renault, who started the season very well by winning the first three races and the last.”
