RED BULL ON STAGE – RALLY GREAT BRITAIN PREVIEW

RED BULL ON STAGE – RALLY GREAT BRITAIN PREVIEW
Kimi Raikkonen, backed by Red Bull on the World Rally Championship this year, was exactly one month and four days old when the legendary Hannu Mikkola won what was then called the RAC Rally in 1979: a four-day marathon up and down the length of Great Britain in wet and wintry conditions, featuring 56 special stages and 687 competitive kilometres.

Kimi won’t have noticed the first time that the Rally Great Britain came into his life as he could not even walk, let alone drive. But several years later this fact would go on to have an immense significance, as Mikkola is one of the many Finnish rally heroes who inspired Kimi to go beyond his comfort zone and step inside a rally car.

Mikkola was one of the flying Finns who made the specialised forests of Great Britain their own, along with Henri Toivonen, Markku Alen, Tommi Makinen and Marcus Gronholm; to name just a few examples. In fact, a Finn has won in Great Britain 21 times in the 65-year history of the event.

In his first year of the World Rally Championship Kimi certainly won’t be challenging for victory in Wales, but nonetheless all these icons of the sport have made their mark on the 2007 Formula 1 World Champion.

“Rallying is like a national sport in Finland: since I was a kid I followed it and I grew up with all these big names who were right at the front,” he said. “So rallying is something that I always wanted to try: it was not at all a sudden decision. At the end of last year the opportunity came up so I was very happy to take it. Our season has not gone entirely according to plan, but this is actually what I expected: it’s completely normal when you are learning something so new. But I’ve really enjoyed it. Not so many people get the chance to compete at this level and I want to use all the lessons I have learned this year. I’m sure that Rally Great Britain is going to be a very tricky way to end the season because I hear that the grip is changing all the time and I know that the weather is going to be bad, but you learn more by pushing yourself to the limit. I’m looking forward to it a lot.”

RED BULL ON STAGE – PREVIEW SPAIN 2010

Grand Canyon Rapidsの吐き気を催すライドFurius Baco(トップスピード135km/hを誇るヨーロッパ最速のローラーコースター)、Dragon Khan(前述とは別のローラーコースター、こちらは8つのループを特徴とする)。

RED BULL ON STAGE – PREVIEW SPAIN 2010.
This weekend, Red Bull driver Kimi Raikkonen will travel from Mexico to Polynesia to China to the Wild West. And he’s not even going to leave Spain once.
This geographic miracle is made possible by the fact that the Rally de Espana, also known to fans as the Catalunya Rally, is based in the Port Aventura theme park: Europe’s answer to the famous Universal Studios in America. All these exotic regions of the world are represented in the park, thanks to stomach-churning rides such as the Grand Canyon Rapids, Furius Baco (the fastest rollercoaster in Europe with a top speed of 135kph) and the Dragon Khan (another rollercoaster, this time featuring eight inversions). Hold onto your paella…
Kimi’s rally diet will be equally mixed, because the Rally de Espana takes in both asphalt and gravel surfaces this year. On Friday, the drivers will compete on gravel roads, whereas on Saturday and Sunday the surface will be the more typical fast and flowing asphalt that Spain’s round of the World Rally Championship is famous for.
It is often said that the Catalunya Rally is the closest that world rallying comes to circuit racing. Kimi, knows a few things about racing thanks to his 18 Grand Prix wins, does not entirely agree. But like most of the events this year, it will be a brand new experience for the ‘ice man’. So what does he think?

“I don’t know the rally at all, but the route doesn’t look like any race circuit I’ve ever seen, although I’ve heard some people say it’s similar!” he joked before starting the recce. “This year it’s going to be completely different too as the first day is gravel. But I think it’s quite nice to have the variety on this event, even though gravel is not our strongest surface. In the end we’ll just do our best and try not to make any mistakes, which has been our goal since the start of the year. It should be a very interesting rally that teaches us a lot, but I don’t think we should have expectations that are too high. If we can be near the top six then that would be great, but the main is just to get to the end. If you go like crazy on the first day and go off, then you don’t learn anything. And that’s why I’m here: to learn.”

Kaj Lindstrom, the man who reads Kimi his notes, has plenty of experience to pass on in Spain. But as Kaj points out, Kimi has been pretty good at teaching himself too. “Kimi’s obviously been used to winning in Formula One all the time, and now in rallying he starts from scratch,'” said the Finn. “It can’t be easy, having to go back to basics when you’re a World Champion. But I’ve been really impressed by his attitude. He takes in absolutely everything and if you consider what he’s achieved despite his lack of experience, it’s pretty impressive. Hopefully Spain will be good for us: Kimi should be more comfortable on the asphalt roads of Saturday and Sunday.”

The Rally de Espana is based in the popular tourist resort of Salou, an hour’s drive south of Barcelona on the Costa Daurada. While the town is normally famous for buckets, spades and beaches, the coming weekend is going to be a long way from being a holiday for Kimi, Kaj and all the other intrepid Red Bull-backed World Rally Championship crews…

CITROEN JUNIOR TEAM IN SPAIN 2010 – A PREVIEW.
On Friday, the crews will face a stage that is 100% gravel (SS2/5 La Ribera d’Ebre) and two mixed surface stages. The first stage of the loop, Terra Alta (35.94 km) is 73% gravel. The final stage, Les Garrigues (17.28 km) is split equally between sealed and loose surfaces.
The two Citroen C4 WRCs will be in gravel configuration on the first day, but will be put into full asphalt specification for Saturday and Sunday during a long service halt (1h15m) on Friday evening.

Citroen Junior Team manager Benoit Nogier commented: “There’s going to be a lot of work to convert our Citroen C4 WRCs from gravel to asphalt specification. We’ve prepared for this service halt especially so that we can be both quick and efficient. The team will be embarking on two 75-minute sessions, which in theory gives us enough time to do everything we need to do…as long as all goes according to plan.”

The two Citroen Junior Team crews each spent a day testing in the south of France in order to prepare for the penultimate round of the season. Sebastien Ogier reported : “The roads were damp. It wasn’t ideal for us to work on the set-up but it was really important to get the kilometres in for both myself and Kimi, who was asking me a lot of questions so that we could compare our impressions.”

“We’ll start second on the road for day one so we’ll certainly suffer a bit with road-sweeping,” continued Sebastien. “We’ll just need to stay in touch and not lose too much time compared to the drivers who are starting behind us. This first mixed day could well play an absolutely crucial role in the final classification. My objective is to finish runner-up in the World Championship and so I need a good result in Spain.”

“It’s another step into the unknown,” added Kimi. “I don’t really know if our start position will be a help or a disadvantage. On the gravel, we will maybe have a clean line to help us but the asphalt sections might be very dirty. It will be vital for us to come out of the first day without making any mistakes so that we are in a good position for the rest of the rally.”

RED BULL ON STAGE. RALLYE DE FRANCE – PREVIEW

RED BULL ON STAGE. RALLYE DE FRANCE – PREVIEW KIMI R.
The French national motto will be a good one for Red Bull driver Kimi Raikkonen as he discovers new territory on the Rallye de France this weekend: the first time that the event is being run in Alsace after several years in Corsica.
Liberty: After showing great pace on the last all-new round of the World Rally Championship, in Bulgaria, Kimi is free to demonstrate just what he is capable of on the surface that he is most familiar with. Or, to be accurate, the surface that he is least unfamiliar with.
Equality: Kimi will be driving the same Citroen C4 WRC as the great Sebastien Loeb, who has been undefeated on asphalt since 2004. The same record stands for Citroen, which is the car to beat on sealed surfaces.
Fraternity: Once more, Kimi will be part of the extended Red Bull and Citroen family as it celebrates its home event and very possibly a seventh consecutive drivers’ title for Loeb. The rally runs through Loeb’s native Alsace, so there’s bound to be a good party with plenty of Red Bull cocktails afterwards.

Apart from that, Kimi has little idea of what to expect, although he did join the ranks of rally winners two weeks ago by triumphing on the Rallye Vosgien: a small national event in France that contains similar stages to those he will see this weekend.
Experience is what it is all about for Kimi this year, and he is hoping that the knowledge he gained in Sebastien Loeb’s back garden will help him when he faces the rest of the WRC field on what will still only be his 10th World Rally Championship event in the Citroen C4 WRC.

“It’s not easy, that’s for sure,” said Raikkonen. “But I’m hoping that we can have a good result in France. If we can show the same sort of pace like we did in Bulgaria, in the top five, then that would be really good. The problem is that it’s always hard to predict a result when you don’t know anything about what the route is going to be like, so we’ll just concentrate very hard on the recce to end up with the best set of pace notes possible. Generally we’ve improved in every area since the start of the season and I feel a lot more comfortable now, so we’re hoping to continue our progress this weekend. France is obviously a really important event for Citroen so I’m sure it’s going to be a lot of fun: a bit like driving for Ferrari at Monza!”

Co-driver Kaj Lindstrom, who has sat alongside Kimi since the Finn made his world rally debut in a Super 2000 car on the Rally Finland last year, is also looking forward to the weekend, although he’s not expecting a French revolution.

“We’re learning step by step; I think sometimes people forget that this is only Kimi’s first year in rallying and that nobody has ever walked straight into the very top level to compete against the very best with no experience before,” said Kaj. “Kimi’s been doing very well, and I’m sure that he can improve again in France. Asphalt is obviously a surface that he knows a bit better, and together we’ll be working on putting together a good set of pace notes during the recce so that Kimi can make the most of his talent on the stages.”

Rallye de France is based in Strasbourg: the seat of the European Parliament and the second-largest port on the Rhine River, after Duisburg in Germany.

PREVIEW: CITROËN JUNIOR TEAM AT RALLYE DE FRANCE.
Kimi Räikkönen is becoming more and more competitive with every stage that he drives in the Citroën C4 WRC, and he was able to take the wheel of the car again recently at the Rallye Vosgien. The 2007 Formula One World Champion claimed his first rally victory on this former round of the French Rally Championship.
“We came to the rally to accumulate more kilometres of experience on asphalt,” explained Kimi. “It was more useful than a straightforward test, as it allowed us to try out quite a variety of special stages. The level in the World Rally Championship now is so high that you cannot afford to lose a single second. So you have to be completely ready from the very start. From what I have heard, the roads we have driven on during that practice event will be very similar to what we will find on the Rallye de France itself. It’s very positive to be able to prepare for a rally in this way.”
The Finn usually feels comfortable on asphalt, having set his first fastest stage time on the World Championship at the Rallye Deutschland. He will also have the advantage of competing on a rally that is brand new to everyone.
“This was the case in Turkey and in Bulgaria, both of which went well for us,” he added. “When we have the same amount of experience as the other crews, it’s definitely easier for us to be on the pace. Once again, this is proof that the key to it all is to stay patient and build up as much experience as possible.”

RED BULL RALLY JAPAN – A PREVIEW. KIMI RETURNS TO THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN

それはまるでDays of Thunder(レース映画)のようだった。

RED BULL RALLY JAPAN – A PREVIEW.
KIMI RETURNS TO THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN
The place: Japan. The year: 2005. The Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, nearly 1000 kilometres south of Rally Japan’s base in Sapporo, was once the scene of one of Kimi Raikkonen’s most breath-taking Formula One victories.

After a wet qualifying session, Kimi started the race from 17th on the grid. He then worked his spectacular way through the field to overtake the leader on the final lap. It was just like Days of Thunder.

Kimi is going to need another Hollywood-style performance this weekend in Japan now that he has switched to rallying, but he is realistic enough to know that there will be no fairytale victory this time. In fact, just getting to the end of the notoriously tough and specialised stages of Rally Japan will be a triumph in itself.

The challenge is enormous: there will be mud and slippery braking areas, over roads so fast and narrow that no mistake goes unpunished. For an absolute beginner – and this will only be Kimi’s ninth WRC event in the Red Bull Citroen C4 WRC – Japan is one of the hardest rallies to master. The weather rarely helps: after all, the island of Hokkaido is a skiing area that is on the same latitude as Siberia. Sunglasses probably won’t be necessary this weekend.

“It’s certainly going to be very different to the Japanese Grand Prix, which is my only other experience of Japan!” said Kimi. “We’ve got to be really careful here: it sounds so easy to make a mistake, and also the grip level is meant to be quite inconsistent – which is not an easy thing to get used to, particularly when you come from a circuit racing background. When we won the Japanese Grand Prix in 2005 it was certainly tough, but there’s no doubt that this is going to be even tougher. Apart from that I don’t really know what to expect, so our priority is to get to the end. When you have rallies that are as specialised as this one, it becomes even more important to have experience of the roads.”

Precision is the name of the game in Japan, and one person who can certainly help Kimi with this is the man sat alongside him: co-driver Kaj Lindstrom. Kaj has competed on Rally Japan just once before, but he is aiming to make sure that none of his slickly delivered pace notes get lost in translation on the stages around Sapporo.

“I think this is going to be one of the most difficult rallies that we face all year,” said Kaj. “It’s also a great opportunity for us though to build on the work that we’ve done with the pace notes, which have to be absolutely exact in Japan. Getting the notes right is always one of the hardest things for any racing driver to get used to and Kimi has been doing really well. On the last rally we set our first fastest stage time together, so it’s a good sign that things are moving in the right direction.”

The action for Kimi on Rally Japan already gets underway tomorrow night (Tuesday) when he will race an electric go-kart capable of 130kph at a Red Bull event in the Sapporo Dome, which hosted the football World Cup back in 2002. Now the famous Dome is home to Sapporo’s football team, as well as the unusually named Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters baseball squad…

RALLY JAPAN 2010 – PREVIEW KIMI R. AND MORE….

KIMI IS COMING TO MY TOWN★☆★

RALLY JAPAN 2010 – PREVIEW KIMI R. AND MORE….
The Rally Japan gets underway on Thursday 9 September with a superspecial in Sapporo. On Friday 10 September and Saturday 11 September the route will take the crews towards the towns of Tomakomai, Chitose and Eniwa in the south of the island of Hokkaido. The final day, Sunday 12 September, visits the area around Sunagawa, Bibai and Naie, to the northeast of the service park close to Sapporo.

Kimi Räikkönen has been used to making the trip to Japan throughout his Formula One career, winning the Japanese Grand Prix in 2005, but the gravel stages on the island of Hokkaido are going to be all new to him.

Kimi finished in the points on his last outing, the all-asphalt Rallye Deutschland, and also set the first fastest stage time of his short WRC career to date. He said: “We’ve not been testing since we finished the Rallye Deutschland. When we get to Japan, I’m going to have to get straight back into the rhythm again. I’m expecting it to be a very tricky event for us. From what I’ve heard, the Rally Japan is particularly complex. And it’s sure to be even more complicated for a beginner like me.”

The Finn has been in the points on four occasions from the eight starts he has taken this year, but his objectives remain unchanged. “My targets are exactly the same,” he confirmed. “From the first few stages in Japan we will be able to see the pace we can run at. But once more the main thing will be to be there at the end of the rally.”

Be the first to like.

RED BULL RALLYE DEUTSCHLAND – PREVIEW

Everyone aged 18 or over has to do military service in Finland, even Formula One World Champions. So every year 27,000 Finnish boys (women are exempted) join the army. In return for getting up at 5am and enduring cold showers for up to a year, the young conscripts are paid between four and 10 Euros per hour.
Most people are keen never to go back. Yet Kimi will return to military duty once more this weekend, when he takes on some of the most challenging asphalt stages on the World Rally Championship, held in the Baumholder military area on day two of the Rallye Deutschland in Germany.
These long stages are made up of concrete roads that were previously used for testing tanks. By the side of the road are huge stone blocks known as hinkelsteins: these were originally designed for preventing the tanks from going off the road. Needless to say, hitting one of these in a rally car is not recommended.
Luckily, Kimi has a considerably more sophisticated vehicle than a tank at his disposal: the all-conquering Citroen C4 WRC. And the remaining two days of the Rallye Deutschland, on Friday and Sunday, are somewhat more normal than the unique challenge of Baumholder.
The difference between driving on a circuit and on an asphalt rally stage is huge. But Bulgaria last month showed Kimi’s potential on sealed surfaces in a rally car, and he is determined to capitalise on the experience in Germany this weekend.

“I don’t know exactly what the German stages will be like, but I know that they will be very different to Bulgaria,” said the 2007 Formula One World Champion and winner of 18 Grands Prix. “In racing, the surface of one circuit is not massively different to the surface of another, although there are some small changes. In rallying, the difference is huge on every event. There is so much variety on a rally: every kilometre and every corner is different. That’s why experience is so important in this sport. So I just need to keep on building up my knowledge: I will try my best in Germany but I really need to make sure that I am there at the finish so that I can learn all about this event. Everyone tells me that the stages are quite complicated so we will have to be careful, especially if it is raining.”

Co-driver Kaj Lindstrom knows what to expect from the Rallye Deutschland, having competed on the event twice previously alongside four-time World Champion Tommi Makinen: one of the many rally experts who have been impressed by what Kimi has done in his first year of the world championship.

“This is only going to be Kimi’s second World Championship asphalt rally, and just his ninth WRC event,” added Kaj. “Germany is not going to be an easy one, but Bulgaria was very good for us and we continued making progress in Finland. I’m really pleased by the way that Kimi has come so far in an extremely short space of time: nobody has rallied at this level before with so little experience, and that’s a great achievement. For me, the most important thing in Germany is that we continue learning, work hard on our pace notes, and try to get a solid result. Like Kimi said, it’s all about getting the experience.”

Luckily for Kimi, Rallye Deutschland is the only time that he will be forced into military action this year. The ‘iceman’ is 30, and the obligation to be called into the army in Finland ends when you are 28.
And relax…

PREVIEW: CITROËN JUNIOR TEAM IN GERMANY

PREVIEW: CITROËN JUNIOR TEAM IN GERMANY
The Rallye Deutschland, the second asphalt round of this season, has been eagerly awaited by the Citroën Junior Team. Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia make a return to the cockpit of the number 7 C4 WRC and their aim is to consolidate the potential that they showed in Bulgaria.
Kimi Räikkönen and Kaj Lindström, who naturally feel comfortable on asphalt, have exactly the same objective.

After a very encouraging performance in Bulgaria, the Citroën Junior Team is hoping to do even better on a rally that contains quite different types of asphalt. “Everyone in the team has very good memories of our trip to Bulgaria,” commented team manager Benoit Nogier. “Kimi, who had so much to learn this year, showed just what he is capable of on his first asphalt World Championship Rally and Sébastien was very competitive too. However, the Rally Bulgaria was new for everyone.
In Germany, we will be up against drivers with plenty of experience of the terrain. So the objective we have fixed for our drivers is not to make any mistakes. I’m sure that our C4 WRCs are capable of some excellent results.”

Kimi Räikkönen has been comfortable with the Citroën C4 WRC on asphalt since he first drove it, and now he will have a new playing field on the challenging stages that run along the shores of the Mosel River.
“This will be another new rally for me,” commented Kimi. “On my first asphalt rally with the Citroën C4 WRC, I had a good feeling immediately. The most important thing is for me to get used to driving a WRC car on this surface. From my past experience I can say that I find driving on asphalt a bit more natural, but driving a rally car is still a completely different thing to any form of circuit racing.”

Kaj Lindström, who has been alongside the former Grand Prix champion since he made his rally debut, is also feeling optimistic. “We’re making progress on each rally, which is essential for us this year,” he concluded. “Our performance in Bulgaria, on our first asphalt rally, was the most impressive we have put in since the start of the season and I know that there is still plenty more to come from Kimi.”

PREVIEW RALLY FINLAND. RED BULL RALLY ON STAGE….

このとき、彼は翼を得るにも、レッドブルさえ必要としない(he doesn’t even need Red Bull to give him wings)。

PREVIEW RALLY FINLAND. RED BULL RALLY ON STAGE….
Question: what do Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen and America’s Mike Powell have in common? Answer: both of them are experts at the long jump.

Powell, born in Pennsylvania, broke Bob Beamon’s 23-year-old long jump record at the 1991 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, leaping for 8.95 metres. The record still stands today.

It’s impressive, but not quite as far as a World Rally Car can jump over the famous rollercoaster crests of Rally Finland, which launch the cars into the air like trampolines. The unofficial record is held by Finnish driver Harri Rovanpera, who managed to make his car fly for a whole 75 metres a few years ago. Beat that, Mike.

But as spectacular as it looks, Kimi Raikkonen will be aiming to spend as little time as possible in the air on Rally Finland. That’s not because he’s got a fear of flying (which is just as well as he’s competing on 12 rallies scattered all over the world this year with Red Bull). Instead it’s because there are certain things that you can’t do when you are airborne in a rally car. Notably, brake and steer.

When you only spend half the time with your wheels touching the ground, it’s essential to make the most of those moments. Luckily Kimi has some experience of Rally Finland before, but it’s still going to be a huge adventure in front of his home crowd. On this occasion, he doesn’t even need Red Bull to give him wings.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Kimi. “It’s so exciting to drive the car on these roads, and it’s certainly a very different experience to what I have been used to in Formula One. But although it sounds strange, Finland is probably the closest a gravel rally gets to being on asphalt. Some of the roads are really fast and smooth; others are twisty and bumpier. That’s what I really like about rallying: everything is so varied, even during the course of just one rally. There’s no way that you can memorise the route like you would on a race track, so instead you have to concentrate on the pace notes. A rally car isn’t as fast as a Formula One car, but when you are flat-out between the trees, believe me, it feels just as quick! Rally Finland is something that I grew up watching when I was small, so it feels very special for me to be competing here now.”

For Kimi it’s the second time on this event, whereas his co-driver Kaj Lindstrom is tackling Rally Finland for the 11th time. Kaj comes from Mikkeli, not so far from the rally’s base in Jyvaskyla, so he’s got a pretty good idea of what to expect from the fastest rally in the World Championship. And yet it nearly always springs a surprise.

“I actually couldn’t quite remember how many times I had competed on the Rally Finland before: I really had to stop and think about it,” commented Kaj. “I remember very clearly though the first time that I did it with Kimi last year. We were just in a Super 2000 car but straight away we were in the top three of the class, and it was clear just how much speed and natural talent he had in rallying. Obviously our task is a bit more complicated this year, but there’s no real pressure either: we had a useful test and we’re just going to go out there, do our best, and try to put on a really nice show.”

Mike Powell, who now teaches long jump technique to young athletes, once said: “I believe that the approach in 90% of the jump. It sets up the rhythm, it sets up the takeoff, and that’s really the majority of the work. Once you leave the ground this whole distance that you can go is already pre-determined by the amount of speed you have at take-off.”

CITROËN JUNIOR WRC, PREVIEW: RALLY FINLAND

CITROËN JUNIOR WRC, PREVIEW: RALLY FINLAND
Following the asphalt of Bulgaria, the FIA World Rally Championship gets back to gravel with the legendary Rally Finland. For the first time this year, Dani Sordo and Marc Marti will drive for the Citroën Junior Team.
The team’s second Citroën C4 WRC will be in the hands of Kimi Räikkönen and Kaj Lindström, who are competing in front of their home crowd. For 60 years now, the 1000 Lakes Rally – which then became the Rally Finland – has been a classic fixture for all the crews.

The event is often nicknamed the ‘Jyväskylä Grand Prix’ and it has featured seven times in the top 10 fastest rallies ever held in the history of the World Rally Championship. The quickest Rally Finland took place in 2005, with an average speed of 122.86 kph recorded on the event.

For the first time in his short World Rally Championship career, Kimi Räikkönen will be starting an event that he has already contested last year. In 2009, the 2007 Formula One World Champion showed some highly impressive pace before unfortunately going off the road.

“We were able to get back up to speed on gravel thanks to a good pre-Finland test,” said Kimi. “Those testing kilometres are absolutely vital on a rally like this one. The experience from last year is certainly going to help, but there is such a performance gap between a Super 2000 machine and a World Rally Car that it’s almost like driving a different rally. I’m really looking forward to getting started. When I was in Formula One, I never got the chance to race in front of my home crowd. I know that there are going to be loads of fans out in service and by the side of the stages. For me, this is a real highlight of the season!”

RED BULL RALLY BULGARIA – A PREVIEW

RED BULL RALLY BULGARIA – A PREVIEW
Dan KolovとNikola Petrov。

Dan Kolov

RED BULL RALLY BULGARIA – A PREVIEW
In Finland, the national sport is rallying. In Bulgaria, the latest stop on the World Rally Championship tour, the national sport is…wrestling.

Two of Bulgaria’s biggest sporting heroes were wrestlers: Dan Kolov and Nikola Petrov. Anybody deranged enough to make a joke about Nikola having a girl’s name was unlikely to last long. In fact Petrov was never once defeated in his 25-year wrestling career, having been also crowned Champion of America in 1898.

As for Kolov, he first became famous for his ability to bend sections of railway line around his own neck. So another man who inspired extreme politeness in everybody he met.

Kimi Raikkonen’s only fight is going to be with the Bulgarian rally stages, which are brand new to everybody and consist entirely of asphalt. Having won 18 Grands Prix, claimed 62 podiums and scored 579 Formula One points, Kimi does already know a thing or two about driving quickly on sealed surfaces. But it’s fair to say that the asphalt stages of Bulgaria will carry about as much resemblance to a racing circuit as Nikola Petrov did to Nicole Kidman.

“It’s so different: it’s a bit like saying that if you can drive on the normal road OK, then you can drive in Formula One,” is how Kimi puts it, briefly giving us all hope that we could in fact become Formula One drivers. But then he explains further: “Rallying and racing is so far apart that the biggest difference is not just the surface. Instead it’s the style of driving and the way that you work with the car. There is one thing in common, which is that you use a steering wheel for both. I can’t think of many other things to be honest. But I’m looking forward to the weekend. Asphalt should be a bit more normal for me.”

Or maybe that should be ‘less abnormal’ – because Bulgaria will still only be Kimi’s sixth World Rally Championship event in his Citroen C4 WRC and his very first on asphalt. Testing and a practice rally in Italy (which Kimi led) have gone very well. Now it’s time for a giant leap into the unknown and some stiff competition on super-fast roads.

As always, experienced co-driver Kaj Lindstrom has some words of wisdom for his chauffeur. “We’re starting again from scratch here and while testing has gone really well, you never know where you are until you get to the rally,” points out Kaj. “I actually did an asphalt rally last year with Kimi in a Super 2000 car, and it was clear straight away that he’s got a great feeling with this surface. But I don’t think Bulgaria will be a typical asphalt rally. We’re going to need to do a good job making pace notes in the recce, and that is what we are concentrating on for now.”

Dan Kolov used to say: “I feel strong, because I’m a Bulgarian.” Kimi doesn’t need a reason to feel strong though. He just does.

RALLY BULGARIA (9-11 JULY 2010) – PREVIEW

RALLY BULGARIA (9-11 JULY 2010) – PREVIEW
The second part of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship gets underway with the Rally
Bulgaria. On its World Championship debut, the Balkan country hosts the crews in the town of Borovets, the oldest ski resort in Bulgaria. Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia and Kimi Räikkönen / Kaj Lindström will defend the colours of the Citroën Junior Team on the event.
Of the seven rallies still to come, four will be on asphalt. Two of them will be on known territory in Germany and Spain, while the other two are completely new events in Bulgaria and Alsace.

In order to prepare for the second half of the season, with its strong asphalt bias, the Citroën Junior Team has been testing in France and also took part in the Rally della Lanterna in Italy.
“This has allowed our drivers to stay match fit so that they are in the best possible position heading into the second half of the season,” explained team manager Benoit Nogier. “We have been working on how to get the best use and performance out of Pirelli’s new tyres. This experience will be very useful for the rallies still to come.”

As the roads will be new for all the World Rally Championship competitors, the Citroën Junior Team crews will suffer less from their comparative lack of experience relative to the other crews. “It’s the first asphalt rally of the season,” added Nogier. “It’s not necessarily the surface that we’re going to be the most comfortable on. As has been the case since the start of the year, our objective is simply to take away as much experience as possible on the forthcoming rallies. That will be our watchword with Sébastien and Kimi.”

The best result for Kimi Räikkönen and Kaj Lindström so far has been fifth in Turkey, and now they get to discover a new surface. “Now we start a new chapter,” said the former F1 World Champion.

“After snow and gravel, here we are on asphalt. It’s something that I’m really looking forward to. I had a really good feeling during the tests and I hope to be able to show that on the roads in Bulgaria.”

Kimi Raikkonen Driver Blog from Rally Portugal

Kimi Raikkonen Driver Blog from Rally Portugal
Writing this from Portugal is a bit of a new experience for me, particularly as I have never even been to Portugal before! It’s a nice country, but I have to say that the stages are really tricky.
I expected this rally to be quite difficult from the start, but maybe not this difficult. I’ve been back in the car for the first time in over a month, and although I had a day of testing in France, that’s hardly the same as being in competition in Portugal.
The most difficult thing? Actually there are lots of tricky things. First of all, everyone has a lot more experience than me. All the other guys have seen these stages for the last three years but this is still only my seventh-ever WRC rally.
Then there are the stages themselves. The rally is on gravel and I’m finding the grip really inconsistent. There are also a few other things catching me out.
For example, you often have corners that are right on the top of some crests and this makes it really difficult to get the braking and the line right. I can tell you this now: rallying is a lot harder than Formula One, but as always it just depends on what you’re used to.
The engineers sometimes talk to the drivers over the radio in Formula One, but this is something that I never really liked: I preferred just to get on and drive the car. So imagine what it’s like now, when I have a co-driver telling me what to do all the time! Getting the pace notes right is an important part of rallying and I think we have some way to go before we have completely got on top of that.
So, it’s really not easy. But I’m definitely enjoying myself. For a start, the atmosphere is much more relaxed and a lot less political than it was in Formula One. I’ve been made to feel very welcome; there are nice people here. There’s no pressure either: I’m just learning something different at my own pace.
I like Portugal too. When you are in a rally car you get to see some of the country you are in: it’s not like Formula One where all you see is the airport, the hotel and the circuit.
We’re staying in a hotel in Vilamoura: quite a nice tourist place that has a little port and some restaurants and bars. Although the days on a rally are very long, over the course of the year you get more time to yourself and I am really enjoying that.
Portuguese people seem to love motor sport: in fact any sport! The service park for the rally is in the Estadio Algarve: a stadium just outside of Faro. I’ve forgotten the name of the team that plays there, but somebody told me that they weren’t very good. Just goes to show, life is tough when you’re a top sportsman…

KIMI LOOKS TO WORK WONDERS IN PORTUGAL
There were originally seven wonders of the ancient world: the Colossus of Rhodes (a big statue), the Pyramids at Giza (the only ancient wonder that still exists), the hanging gardens of Babylon (a cheat, as they didn’t actually hang), the mausoleum at Halicarnassus (so that Greek leaders could enjoy being dead), the statue of Zeus at Olympia (apparently even bigger than the Colossus) and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (again, think super-size).

The final wonder was the lighthouse at Alexandria. When it was built, in around 280BC, it was around 135 metres high: making it the tallest structure in the world for several centuries. These days, it would probably be classified as a low-rise building in downtown Manhattan.

The island that the lighthouse was built on was called Pharos, which eventually became the Latin word for ‘lighthouse’ as well. Faro in Portugal, the coastal venue for round six of the World Rally Championship, also sports a number of elaborate lighthouses: no doubt inspired by the wonder of Alexandria.

It will be an eighth wonder if Red Bull driver Kimi Raikkonen gets near the podium on what will only be his sixth World Rally Championship event of any description and just his fifth event at the wheel of the Citroen Junior Team C4 WRC.

But that is the objective that the former Grand Prix champion is steadily working towards and with every rally he is showing a distinct improvement. On his last rally, in Turkey, the Finn finished an excellent fifth overall – boosting his confidence for the future.

Portugal is a somewhat different proposition. It’s one of the classics on the World Rally Championship calendar and consequently all the top drivers know it well. The last Portuguese Grand Prix was held at Estoril in 1996 – five years before Kimi started driving in Formula One – so he has never even competed in Portugal at the top level. In fact, he has never even been to Portugal before.

“It’s fair to say that everything is completely new to me,” said Kimi. “I’ve been testing in France, but it’s not the same as being in competition. The other drivers have been to New Zealand – which wasn’t on my programme – and they also know the Rally of Portugal well, so it’s not going to be easy for us. That doesn’t really bother me though, as I am here to learn more than anything else. The final result at the end of the rally doesn’t matter to me really: it’s all about how much information I can take away for the future. We’re just continuing our improvement step by step.”

Co-driver Kaj Lindstrom has considerably more experience of Portugal, having competed in 1999 and 2001. On those occasions though the rally was held in the north of the country around Porto: where a pre-rally roadshow took place on the Sunday before the start. Sharing a car with Citroen’s factory drivers Sebastien Loeb and Dani Sordo, who are also backed by Red Bull, Kimi thrilled a huge crowd while Kaj looked on.

“When it comes to the actual rally It’s going to be a tricky event, but I’m seeing Kimi grow in confidence all the time,” said Kaj. “Since we started competing together, my role has actually changed. Kimi is getting to know the car more and more, so rather than guiding him I am now just giving him the information he needs to make his own decisions. That’s just one example of how Kimi is really growing into his role as a rally driver, so we’re both really looking forward to the weekend.”

Rallye de Portugal (27-30 May 2010) – Preview

The Citroen Junior Team on familiar ground

After the long trip to New Zealand, the World Rally Championship gets back to European soil this weekend. The Rallye de Portugal, round six of the season, will be an excellent opportunity for Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia to underline their recent strong performances. Kimi Raikkonen and Kaj Lindstrom have not done a rally for a month now, but they will aim to continue their progress with the Citroen C4 WRC.
New Zealand did not form part of the scheduled programme for Kimi Raikkonen and Kaj Lindstrom, who return to the Citroen C4 WRC in Portugal. The former F1 World Champion will continue learning how to drive a WRC challenger on gravel over the demanding Portuguese stages. Having retired in Mexico, finished eighth in Jordan and claimed fifth in Turkey, the 30-year-old Finn will have to get to grips with another new event for him in Portugal, one of the classic rounds of the World Rally Championship.
“The short break did me a lot of good,” said Kimi. “We were able to sit down and analyse our start to the season, concentrating on specific details such as making pace notes and comparing our times to those of the frontrunners. A few kilometres of testing also meant that I was able to quickly get back up to speed in the car. I know that we still have a lot to learn because rallying remains a completely new sport for me, but I feel that we are making consistent progress.”
In Portugal, for his fifth event at the wheel of the Citroen C4 WRC, Kimi Raikkonen is also retaining the same targets. “I said from the very start that it was just a question of learning,” he pointed out. “We need to have everything in hand before trying to accelerate and chase the leaders. So it is necessary for us to get more and more experience. That’s going to be our goal in Portugal once more.”

In order to prepare for round five of the season, both drivers took part in a gravel test session in eastern France.

KIMI AND THE RED BULL RALLY OF TURKEY – PREVIEW

KIMI AND THE RED BULL RALLY OF TURKEY – PREVIEW
